December 2, 2022 – In conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Penang’s industrialisation, the state government, via Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and InvestPenang, has led a year-long event surrounding on 13 focused themes to demonstrate Penang’s successful transformation and forward-looking plans. Approaching the end of 2022, the State Recognition Dinner, hosted over 650 participants, was held in Setia SPICE Convention Centre to appreciate Penang’s state dignitaries, pioneer investors, theme drivers, supporting associations and agencies, as well as industry players, for their continuous support.

The Chief Minister of Penang, Rt. Hon. Mr. Chow Kon Yeow, expressed his gratitude to all the stakeholders in driving Penang towards success. “The convergence of public-private-people partnership which enabled sustained growth and productivity in Penang, also laid the groundwork for Penang to unlock limitless potential. Moving forward, Penang pledges to make great strides in further enhancing our ecosystem. This include the readiness of physical and digital infrastructure, availability of talent and uplift of liveability stature, all of which are critical to maintain our status as the Economic Powerhouse of Malaysia and the Silicon Valley of the East.”

During the dinner, Chow also shared the state’s multifaceted initiatives on talent, infrastructure, small and medium enterprises, digitalisation and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) agenda.

The Chairperson of the Organising Committee for this celebration, Dato’ Seri Lee Kah Choon shared the state’s competitive advantages and aspirations to uphold its conducive ecosystem for the next 50 years and beyond. “With the escalating pace of technological evolvement, all stakeholders, from the government, corporate and education sectors, down to the individual level, would need to be agile in order to stay relevant to the industry. After 50 years of industrialisation journey in Penang, I am very excited to witness the beginning of our next journey. We are ready to be a disruptive Penang, technically speaking.”

In his welcoming remarks, Dato’ Aziz Bakar, the CEO of PDC said, “To date, PDC has completed the development of nine industrial parks, with the total size of approximately 6,000 acres and created more than 250,000 jobs. PDC has carefully structured a road-map and drafted a five-year Strategic Plan through the years of 2019-2023 as its action plan to ensure its sustainability for the long-term prosperity of the state and the people.”

Also attended the dinner are members of the Penang State Executive Council, members of the Malaysian Parliaments, members of the Penang State Assembly, Penang’s former Chief Minister, foreign delegates, senior state officials, heads of government agencies and captains of the industry.
