WHAT’S HAPPENING

EMPHASISING the hands-on approach to science, students will be able to get extra insight on experiments and technology at Tech Dome Penang.

In conjunction with the nationwide Science Week, Tech Dome will be hosting students from 75 selected schools this week with fun workshops, exhibitions, programmes and science shows.

They will get to try their hand at various experiments including making aircraft from cardboard and straws, a mini vortex cannon and learning about food colouring and natural cosmetics.

Organised by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Information (Mosti) and National Institute of Biotechnology Malaysia, the Science Week, which ends on Saturday, is to stir interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) among students.

Mosti planning and commercialisation deputy secretary Kua Abun said the Science Week was part of Mosti’s initiative to heighten awareness about the importance of science.

“We hope the Science Week will help encourage more students to choose the science stream,” he said at the launch of the event yesterday.

Tech Dome Penang chief executive officer Dr Khong Yoon Loong said it was important to encourage students to enjoy science.

“If there’s less exposure to lab work, students may find the subject boring.

“Being hands-on and learning through experiments will add fun to the subject,” he said.

Dr Khong said that besides students, those interested could also join in on the fun during the event with no extra charges.

Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas launched the celebration.

Also present was State Secretary Datuk Seri Farizan Darus.
