[Press Release] EMC Announces its First SEA’s RM900 Mil CCL Manufacturing Facility in Malaysia

20 June 2024

June 20, 2024 Elite Material Co., Ltd. (EMC) is pleased to announce the commencement of construction for its new Copper Clad Laminate (CCL) manufacturing facility in Penang Science Park North (PSPN). This facility represents a significant investment commitment and marks EMC’s inaugural production plant in Southeast Asia, aimed at enhancing long-term business resilience. As of now, the global technology leader plans to invest over RM900 million over a period of time in this campus in PSPN. This significant investment is poised to transform the printed circuit board (PCB) industry in Malaysia.

This production site will encompass approximately 14 acres of industrial land. The construction will be carried out in two phases: Phase One will have a monthly capacity of 600,000 sheets, with Phase Two adding an additional 150,000 sheets. The construction of this plant is anticipated to be completed in Q1 2025, with mass production scheduled to begin in Q2 2025. This facility will serve both global and local customers, providing EMC with additional growth momentum in the years ahead.

YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang, stated, “The State government would like to express our deepest appreciation to EMC in choosing Penang to house its first production plant in Southeast Asia, signifying Penang’s position as a high-impact economic hub nationally and regionally. EMC’s strategic investment is a testament to Penang’s robust industrial ecosystem having gained momentum in attracting investments from leading players in the E&E supply chain. This is a milestone in Penang’s industry transformation journey and evidence of how major strategic investments translate into technology and economic spillovers.”

Mr. Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid, the Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), expressed his pleasure at EMC’s decision to establish their first Southeast Asian production plant in Malaysia. MIDA is dedicated to providing comprehensive support to EMC throughout the entire project lifecycle. This collaborative approach ensures smooth and successful operations, reinforcing Malaysia’s reputation as a reliable and trusted partner for global industry leaders like EMC. We look forward to the positive impact this investment will have on both the country and the regional technological landscape.

Mr. Albert Dong, Chairman and CEO of Elite Material Co., Ltd., remarked, “We are thrilled to become the worldwide number three in our industry in 2023, moving up from number four, but we are even more excited to embark on this new chapter in Southeast Asia with the establishment of our state-of-the-art Copper Clad Laminate (CCL) manufacturing facility in Penang. This strategic investment reflects our commitment to our customers’ needs. We are confident that our presence in Malaysia will not only bolster the local PCB industry, but also the semiconductor industry since we are also an IC substrate material manufacturer. We deeply appreciate the support from the Malaysian government, MIDA, and InvestPenang, whose collaboration has been instrumental in making this project a reality. Together, we look forward to driving technological advancements and contributing to the vibrant industrial landscape of Penang and Malaysia.”

EMC, with an annual revenue of USD1.6 billion and leading global market shares in the mobile device and AI/data center segments, officially entered the IC substrate market in 2020 and commenced mass production in 2021. The IC substrate, a key material for semiconductors primarily used in IC products, has become a strategic focus for EMC. The company is poised to leverage its expertise and experience in high-end CCL products to drive innovation and excellence in IC substrates. EMC expects its substrate capacity in Penang to be ready as early as 2026. This expansion into the IC substrate market aligns perfectly with Malaysia’s semiconductor ecosystem, renowned for its competitiveness, and often referred to as the Silicon Valley of the East.
