March 23, 2023 — AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) today announced plans to expand its global business services and engineering presence in Malaysia with the construction of a new, state-of-the art office space and lab facility in Bayan Lepas, Penang.

The building, called “GBS by the Sea”, will include approximately 209,000 square feet of new office and engineering lab space to support AMD growth globally and is expected to be complete in 2024. Developed by the state-owned development agency, Penang Development Corporation (PDC), “GBS by the Sea” includes a 9-storey office building and a 6-storey multi-level carpark with a total net lettable floor space of approximately 300,000 square feet.

The investment announcement took place at a celebratory event at the office of Penang’s Chief Minister, the Right Honourable Mr. Chow Kon Yeow, at KOMTAR. The event was also attended by Dato’ Seri Lee Kah Choon, Special Investment Advisor to Chief Minister of Penang, Dato’ Loo Lee Lian, CEO of InvestPenang, Dato’ Aziz bin Bakar, CEO of Penang Development Corporation and Dato’ Devinder Kumar, Executive Vice President at AMD.

The Chief Minister of Penang, Right Honourable Mr. Chow Kon Yeow said “With more than half a century of continued investment in Malaysia, AMD has proven to be a strategic partner and advocate for Penang’s strong business environment, resilient semiconductor supply chain, and wealth of world-class talent. Our unique combination of strengths has made Penang a preferred location for investors. The sustained confidence from existing investors like AMD augurs well for the state’s development, enabling us to constantly step up to greater heights. With InvestPenang and PDC as the facilitators, the state government is committed to ensure smooth implementation of AMD’s expansion in Penang.”

“Penang has played a pivotal role in both the semiconductor ecosystem globally and in the assembly and test operations for AMD leadership technology and products for more than 50 years,” said Dato’ Devinder Kumar, Executive Vice President at AMD. “Through this investment and, with continued support from the Penang government, AMD remains committed to driving innovation in Penang to deliver new capabilities that advance the data center, scientific research, communications and more. Our new facility in Bayan Lepas will increase our total headcount and capability to support growth across our global business services and engineering expertise. We are pleased to partner with InvestPenang today to mark another important milestone in our longstanding business presence in Malaysia.”

AMD has been an active part of the Malaysian semiconductor ecosystem since 1972, when the company established its first assembly manufacturing facility in Penang. Since then, AMD Malaysia has grown to more than 800 employees spanning two Global Shared Services facilities in Penang and Cyberjaya that support AMD employees, customers and suppliers worldwide. In September of 2022, AMD celebrated 50 years of operations, business services and innovation in Malaysia with a donation of RM 112,500 to the Penang Science Cluster to advance STEM education initiatives for Malaysia’s next generation of aspiring innovators. In June 2022, AMD strategic partner and supplier TF-AMD Microelectronics Sdn.
