[Press Release] GBS By The Sea: A Premium Office Building in Penang IC Design and Digital Park to House Three Prominent Design & Development Centres

23 July 2024

July 23, 2024 – Penang is poised to solidify its reputation as a global hub for Integrated Circuit (IC) Design and Digital Technologies with the upcoming completion of GBS By The Sea.  Scheduled to be completed by 1st December 2024, this state-of-the-art office space, equipped with lab facility is meticulously designed to house three prominent design, research and development (R&D), and engineering services centres.

GBS By The Sea is part of Penang IC Design and Digital Park launched on 4th May 2024, which offers a total of one million square feet of premium office space to house high-impact activities including IC Design, R&D, Digital Global Business Services (DGBS) and digital technologies investments. This state-of-the-art building stands as a prominent seafront building offering an excellent view of the sea and the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah bridge. The 9-storey building provides a net lettable area of 294,000 square feet, equipped with 830 parking bays.

A unique feature of GBS By The Sea is its two 11kV power substation, making it the first building in Malaysia to offer this advance infrastructure. In addition, the building boasts a floor loading capacity of 5KN/m2, which is ideal to house IC design and R&D companies. Moreover, the building also meets the standards of a Malaysia Digital building (previously known as Multimedia Super Corridor Cybercentre), further underscoring its premium facilities and technological capabilities.

GBS By The Sea will be fully occupied by three prominent tenants: AMD, Celestica and one of tech giants from the United States. AMD announced its expansion plan last year to support its growth in GBS and engineering expertise and Celestica will be establishing their first Malaysia R&D and Design and Development center in Penang. The building is expected to create approximately 2,000-3,000 high-value jobs.

“Penang is set to become a catalyst for Malaysia to ascend the value chain and cement its position as the preferred investment destination for high-end activities in the region. We are committed to advancing technology, industry, and the economy to enhance the state’s competitiveness globally. Through Penang’s sustainable ecosystem, the State Government is confident that we are well-positioned to realise this vision,” said the Chief Minister of Penang, the Right Honorable Mr. Chow Kon Yeow.

As Penang continue to emerges as a thriving hub for DGBS and Centre of Excellence (CoE) supported by its conducive business environment and robust ecosystem, the availability of premium office space is essential to attracting multinational companies to house their operations here.

Penang IC Design and Digital Park is committed to providing top-tier infrastructure and facilities, fostering an ideal working environment for businesses and residents. Upcoming amenities enhancements within the park include pedestrian-friendly walkways, bicycle lanes, park-and-ride facilities, outdoor recreational spaces, and a local eatery. To boost environmental-friendly connectivity, shared micromobility services like electronic scooters and bicycles will be introduced. Additionally, the newly semi-automated food court – Bayana, is within walking distance from GBS By The Sea, offering convenient dining options.

Penang is committed to investing in the establishment of high-end office spaces to attract and retain top-tier business and talent.  Over the past 30 years, Penang attracted 28 IC design companies, including industry giants such as Intel, AMD, Oppstar Technology, SkyeChip, Infinecs Systems, Microchip, UST Global, Lattice, and Synopsys, to name a few. Moving forward, Penang continues to develop world-class infrastructure, aiming to solidify its position as a leading destination for business excellence and growth in the region.
