Penang, Malaysia, July 29, 2026 – The globally active life science company Eppendorf SE is taking the next major step in expanding its international manufacturing network by establishing a new production site in Penang, Malaysia. The planned greenfield facility was announced following the signing of the lease agreement for the future site in Bandar Cassia Technology Park, between Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and Eppendorf, attended by the Right Honorable Mr. Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang, Dato’ Abdul Latiff Abdul Aziz, CEO of PDC, Dato’ Seri Loo Lee Lian, CEO of InvestPenang, alongside representatives of Eppendorf, PDC, InvestPenang, Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), and other supporting institutions.
“We are proud to announce an important next step in the Eppendorf Group’s international growth journey,” said Dr. Christine Munz, CEO of the Eppendorf Group. “With today’s signing of the lease agreement, we are strengthening our ties with Malaysia, which has been part of our history in the Asia-Pacific region for more than three decades. Our planned new production site in Penang is a further clear and confident commitment to the country, its people and its industrial capabilities. With this project, Eppendorf is strengthening its global manufacturing network, building a powerful production platform in Southeast Asia and creating the foundation for continued long-term growth.”
The new site is planned as a modern, integrated manufacturing facility for selected products from the Eppendorf Group’s Centrifuges & Instruments portfolio. It will strengthen the company’s global production footprint, create a strong Southeast Asian manufacturing pillar and support Eppendorf’s long-term competitiveness and resilience. Production is expected to begin gradually during the ramp-up phase in 2028.
“Eppendorf’s investment reflects the confidence that global industry leaders continue to place in our industrial ecosystem while strengthening Penang’s capabilities in Scientific and Measuring Equipment – a strategic sector supporting the future of advanced manufacturing, healthcare and life sciences,” said the Right Honorable Mr. Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang. “We welcome Eppendorf to explore opportunities with local companies through the Penang ATE Campus in technology development, localisation, supplier development and supply chain strengthening,” he added.
New modern manufacturing site for high-quality laboratory instruments
At the planned Penang site, Eppendorf intends to manufacture selected products such as centrifuges, mixers, and cyclers. These products support laboratories around the world in research, diagnostics, development, production and quality assurance.
The total investment volume is EUR 40 million. The site is expected to employ around 130 people by the end of 2029, with further development potential as operations ramp up.
With Penang into the future: Building resilience, capability and sustainable growth
Malaysia has played an important role in the company’s Asia-Pacific development for more than three decades, starting with an office in Kuala Lumpur in 1995 and developing into a regional hub for Southeast Asia. With the new site in Penang, Eppendorf intends to expand this presence into manufacturing.
The signing of the lease agreement marks the official go-ahead for the construction of the Eppendorf Group’s new production site in Penang, thereby strategically expanding the company’s global network to include a production site in South-East Asia. The planned site forms part of the Eppendorf Group’s long-term strategy to further expand and strategically strengthen its global production presence.
