Firm injects RM70mil into Penang<\/h1>\n

The investment includes the manufacturing equipment and acquisition of a 1.6ha plot at Penang Science Park, Bukit Minyak, for the construction of a factory.<\/p>\n

The factory will produce medical devices for cardiac rhythm management, electro\u00adphysiology or ablation and cardiovascular surgery for Japanese markets such as balloon catheters, electro-physiological catheters, ablation catheters and open stent grafts.<\/p>\n

Its managing director Kenji Yamada said their technical expertise and experience gained over the years had given them the confidence to spread its wings in Penang.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have chosen Penang as it is the perfect location with good infrastructure and ample skilled human resources.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also received strong support from the state government.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are truly excited and proud to be part of Penang,\u201d he said in a recent press conference at Komtar.<\/p>\n

Yamada signed a sale and purchase agreement with Penang Development Corporation (PDC) for the land.<\/p>\n

Representing PDC was general manager Datuk Rosli Jaafar while Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng witnessed the signing.<\/p>\n

The factory is expected to begin operations in early 2020 and create 50 high-income jobs for a start.<\/p>\n

JLL is a Japan-headquartered leading manufacturer of medical devices, specialising in the cardiovascular field.<\/p>\n

With a 37-year history, it is one of the leading companies selling catheters used in diagnosis and treatment of arrhythmia in Japan.<\/p>\n

Lim, in his speech, said the state\u2019s diversification into fast growing sectors such as medical devices have continued to strengthen the state\u2019s value proposition to investors.<\/p>\n

\u201cPenang is home to a third of medical device companies in Malaysia and accounted for a third of the total value of medical devices exported from Malaysia at RM17.8bil in 2016.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast year, the Association of Malaysian Medical Industries estimated an export growth of 12% valued at RM17.74bil.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe expect Japan Lifeline to contribute positively to Malaysia\u2019s medical device export growth,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He added that Japanese investors were the third largest foreign direct investment contributors in the manufacturing sector to Penang with investment value of RM5.33bil between 2008 and June 2017.<\/p>\n
