Prestige Dynamics chairman Tan Wee Ming says the company has started production of its high-value casing with electro-magnetic interference shielding (EMIS) quality for distance sensors used in automobiles.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese casings are made from imported plastic and steel material that can cut off interference of signals from other electronic devices.<\/p>\n

\u201cInterference can trigger the sensors to beep unnecessarily, creating confusion for drivers,\u201d says Tan.<\/p>\n

Currently, the main markets for its EMIS casings are the US, Europe and China.<\/p>\n

Sale of its products will continue to be supported by the growing demand for vehicles in the coming years.<\/p>\n

A Euler Hermes report projects that the automotive market is on course to cross the 100 million unit threshold in 2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 2018, global sales in new vehicles should exceed 98 million, posting a 2.5% increase.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cPositive forecasts in private consumption and corporate investment, fuelled by rising incomes and still low interest rates, will support new registrations in passenger cars (74% of the total) and commercial vehicles (26%) in the majority of countries,\u201d the Euler Hermes report adds.<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n

According to Tan, the company is now also producing high-value plastic parts and pumps for portable nebulisers.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to a Research and Markets report, the global nebuliser market, valued at US$849.1mil in 2017, is expected to grow to US$1.2bil by 2025,\u201d says Tan.<\/p>\n

\u201cNorth America is an important market for nebuliser technology, probably one of the largest, due to the growth of chronic obstructive pulmonary (COPD) and respiratory diseases. Asia Pacific is another growth area because of the rise in healthcare infrastructure investments.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur key customers for nebulisers are in the US,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n

The company is investing RM30mil to build a new manufacturing plant in Seberang Prai.<\/p>\n

Tan notes that its current manufacturing plant in Seberang Prai is over 80% utilised.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is why we are building another facility next to the present one. The investment is about RM30mil for land and equipment. The facility should be ready in six to nine months.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere will be 10 automated production lines and an automated inspection system in the new facility,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Its automated lines will help reduce its reliance on manual labour, which, Tan says, is becoming expensive.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cost of recruiting foreign labour, for example, has increased. It is expected to increase our present production capacity by 50%,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

The new production site should start contributing to the group\u2019s revenue in 2019.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cOur current output per annum is worth about RM60mil. Once the new plant is operating, the value of output per annum should be around RM90mil,\u201d Tan says.<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n

According to Tan, Prestige Dynamics\u2019 gross margin has been slashed due to intense competition from China, Indonesia and Thailand.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo enhance competitive edge, we have to automate and reduce the foreign labour component, which eats into our margins.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe currently have 400 employees. The new plant will engage only 40 workers, comprising largely of engineers and technicians,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Tan adds that the cost of imported raw materials \u2013 such as nylon, polycarbonate plastics, and engineering plastics \u2013 increased by about 11% in 2017.<\/p>\n

He expects the raw material cost to increase further in 2018.<\/p>\n

Prestige Dynamics also manufactures electronic consumer goods and sunroofs for automobiles.<\/p>\n
