Lam Research Launches Manufacturing Plant in Penang with RM1b Investment<\/h1>\n

Its president and chief executive officer (CEO) Tim Archer\u00a0said the new manufacturing plant at the Batu Kawan Industrial Park has\u00a0a floor space of 800,000 sq\u00a0ft, 100,000 sq ft more than planned earlier.<\/p>\n

He said the new manufacturing facility will serve as the hub for Lam Manufacturing\u2019s operations in Asia and is expected to ramp up production\u00a0to become the highest volume manufacturing facility among the group’s\u00a0global sites.<\/p>\n

\u201cMoving forward, our plans are to continuously hire\u00a0and build strong partnerships with local supply chains, so that we can increase our output over the next six to 12 months, and meet the very strong global demand for semiconductors,\u201d he said at a press conference after the virtual launching ceremony.<\/p>\n

Also present at the ceremony were\u00a0Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) deputy CEO Ahmad Khairuddin Abdul Rahim, US Ambassador to Malaysia Brian D McFeeters\u00a0and Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.<\/p>\n

Chow expressed encouragement that more global semiconductor companies are expanding their operations to Penang, proving the state government\u2019s efforts in creating a sustainable environment, vigorous industrial ecosystem\u00a0and supportive infrastructure appeal\u00a0to major investors.<\/p>\n

\u201cPenang will be able to move up the global semiconductor value chain by unlocking new opportunities in front-end semiconductor manufacturing, which creates prospects for more high-value job opportunities for the local workforce,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Lam Manufacturing Malaysia general manager Soon K Kuek\u00a0said that in line with the expansion of the new facility, the company has also hired more local talent.<\/p>\n

She said that earlier this year, Lam Research committed to hiring\u00a0350 local employees to\u00a0fit into high-value jobs, such as production technicians, assemblers and operation-centric professionals.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have already exceeded this number now and by the end of this year, we are looking to hire more than 600 local workers,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
