UK seeks closer ties on education
Monday January 25, 2010
The British Government is looking at strengthening its educational ties with Penang.
British High Commissioner Boyd McCleary said that currently, Universiti Sains Malaysia had many links with universities in Britain.
He said they were also planning to expand the British Council office in the state, as the council was not solely for English Language classes but also for developing links between both countries.
“Therefore, we hope to expand its presence here not only in English language teaching but to develop links with local schools and universities,” he said.
He said they were also contemplating the setting up of a British Council facility at USM for better English language collaboration.
McCleary, who visited Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng at his office in Komtar yesterday, said he was happy to note that a new British school called Prince of Wales Island International school would be set up in Balik Pulau.
“This is in line with Lim’s idea of creating an education hub in Balik Pulau,” he said.
Other than education, McCleary said they were also looking at working in the tourism, industrial and service sectors.
Lim said the state government had a keen interest in working with companies on heritage conservation.
