Business Process Outsourcing (BPO)
BPO is the outsourcing of Back Office and Front Office functions, typically performed by white collar and clerical workers. Examples include accounting, human resources and medical coding and transcription.
Shared Services Outsourcing (SSO)
Shared Services is the outsourcing of a business function within an enterprise to a highly skilled internal department or group. For example, the purchasing department at one plant, may provide purchasing services to all other plants, within a given manufacturing company. Shared services may also be provided to third parties.
Information Technology Outsourcing (ITO)
Information Technology Outsourcing or ITO is a company's outsourcing of computer or Internet related work to other companies. For example programming, highly customized software products, development tools and web solutions.
Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO)
Knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) is a form of outsourcing, in which knowledge-related and information-related work is carried out by workers in a different company or by a subsidiary of the same organization, which may be in the same country or in an offshore location to save cost. Unlike the outsourcing of manufacturing, this typically involves high-value work carried out by highly skilled staff. Right now, knowledge process outsourcing firms specialize in the fields of content writing and rewriting, research and development, patent research, pharmaceutical technology, equity research, market research, data research, database management, finance modeling, design and development in various industries, animation, medical reports and services, distance education. Engineers, doctors, attorneys and many other professionals are becoming more and more popular.
Promoting Penang as an Outsourcing Center
While Penang continues to be a compelling industrial destination ( one of UNIDO’s top 10 in the world) , it has also built a reputation as “one of the locations to watch” (KPMG) for the next outsourcing boom.
In Malaysia, it is the number two outsourcing location after Cyberjaya.
Penang’s potential to attract SSO business has been recognized for several years.
Penang promotes all types of SSO activities, ie. Information Technology Outsourcing (ITO), Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) and has been equally successful in attracting all three activities.
For example, many of the existing MNCs in Penang have been involved in higher value-added activities like Research, Design and Development, Business Integration, Sourcing and Procurement, Project Management and more, all of which fall within the realm of KPO. Of course, in most of these cases they are all in-sourced.
For BPOs, which include activities like call center, transaction and payroll processing, supply chain management, human resource and training, and billing, MNCs and LLCs in Penang look at both in-source and outsource options. For outsource options, there are many home grown companies that provide world-class services in these areas.
The decision to outsource or offshore is strictly made by the company, but once the decision has been made, then iP will step in to facilitate the process like we do any investment opportunity.
