History
The history of Penang dated back to the 16th century when the Portuguese traders in search for spice, landed in the rocky isle of Batu Ferringhi to obtain fresh supplies of water.
However, the British were probably the first to recognise the strategic location of Penang as an important port of call. During the 18th century, the British was searching for a place to serve as a port to shelter, replenish and repair their mercantile ships between India and China. After two years of negotiation, the British officially took possession of Penang Island. A treaty was sealed with the Sultan of Kedah for the concession of a strip of land on mainland Malaya, which formed Mainland Penang.
Penang was under British rule for one and a half century and flourished as a trade centre under the Second World War, when Penang and Malaya fell to the Japanese in 1941. The British reoccupied Penang and Malaya in 1945 until Malaya achieved independence in 1957. When Malaysia was formed in 1963, Penang became one of its 13 States.
